Western Martial Arts

The Arts of Mars. The art of fighting, of combat, of defense and personal protection. Every culture in the history of the world has had its own unique method of fighting, flavored by its peoples’ perspectives, preferences, history, lore, customs and technology.

In Europe and across the European settlements, martial traditions have been alive and thriving since the earliest days of the Greeks. They are found in many forms, and include sword fighting, knife fighting, wrestling, Pugilism, stick fighting, pole-arms and axe fighting, and much, much more. These are commonly referred to as Western Martial Arts (WMA) or Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA).

Today the Western Martial Arts are enjoying a resurgence. Some are part of a living tradition that can trace their lineage back through centuries of continuous master/student relationships. Others have been resurrected from the pages of ancient manuscripts that describe, in exquisite detail, how our predecessors fought. Some are practiced for their continued practicality, and others for their form, grace and health benefits. But whatever the particulars, there are now thousands of Western Martial Arts groups around the world.

CombatCon brings you some of the most highly skilled and highly respected Western Martial Arts instructors in the world.
